The route to the top:

For all those who would like to conquer Schafberg mountain on foot, there are several options for doing so:

Ascent from St. Wolfgang:
From the valley station, walk along Sternallee past the Försterhof until you reach the right-hand turn leading up to Jausenstation Aschinger.
From there, a wide path leads through the forest up to Dorneralm and then on to Schafbergalm.
From there, hiking route no. 20 (marked) leads up a steep stretch all the way to the summit after crossing the railway line twice.
(Solid walking shoes required)
Walking time: Approx. 3 hours

Ascent from St. Wolfgang past Lake Mönichsee:
From the church, walk a brief stretch towards the post office, then head up towards Kalvarienberg on your right.
Continue on marked hiking route no. 25 through the forest towards Auerriesenalm.
Continue on the narrow path up towards Lake Mönichsee at an altitude of 1,300 metres.
Just before the fork in the road is the start of Purtschellersteig, which first crosses a very steep hillside, then leads towards the entry of a cave via a steep rock face with safety ropes.
Immediately after the cave, the path splits in two. The right-hand path will take you up the summit of the Schafberg across a steep stretch.

Ascent from St. Gilgen:
From the church, head north on Mondseerstraße towards the Bundesstraße.
Cross the Bundesstraße and after a short ascent and descent and another crossing of the Bundesstraße, you will reach the village of Winkl. On your right, a narrow road leads you to Gasthaus Waldschenke.
From there, hiking route no. 804 takes you up the Schafbergalm.
From there, hiking route no. 20 leads up to the summit.
